Thanks to advances in orthodontic technology, braces are now more comfortable and efficient than ever. But what happens if something goes wrong, like a wire poking out of place? Let’s explore what to do and more importantly, how to prevent it.
Braces Components

What Causes My Braces Wire to Pop Out or Get Pokey?
Your braces work hard every day to straighten your teeth, but they’re not invincible.
- Eating Certain Foods: Sticky, hard, crunchy and chewy foods can put unnecessary pressure on your braces and cause the wire to pop out. Common offenders include caramel, popcorn, and chewy candies, wings, beef jerky.
- Accidental Damage: Physical activities, including sports or even simply accidentally bumping your mouth, can cause your brackets or wires to become dislodged.
- Inappropriate Handling: If you use a toothpick, fingernail, or anything else to poke or play with your braces, you might inadvertently dislodge the wire. It’s important to keep your hands away from your braces.
- Broken bracket: breaking the last bracket on your braces can cause the wire to get pokey.
- Wire Migrating: Thin wires can shift from side to side and get pokey.
What to Do If Your Braces Wire Breaks or Pops Out or is Poking
A broken or popped wire doesn’t always require immediate emergency attention, but it’s important to handle the situation properly to avoid discomfort or injury. Here’s what to do if this happens to you:
- Don’t Panic: If your wire comes out of place, don’t worry. The situation may not be as urgent as you think, especially if you’re able to make an appointment with your orthodontist soon. You might experience mild discomfort, but cuts or sores are unlikely to develop within a day or two.
- Use Dental Wax: If you’re unable to see your orthodontist right away, use orthodontic wax to cover any sharp or protruding parts of the wire. Simply roll a small piece of wax into a ball, flatten it, and press it over the wire. This can help prevent irritation to your gums and the inside of your lips or cheeks.
- Wire clip: If you feel you must trim the wire, use clean, sharp nail clippers.
Potential Side Effects of a Broken Archwire
If you don’t address a broken archwire (popped out wire) promptly, you might experience the following:
- Discomfort or Pain: A broken wire can cause irritation, especially if it’s poking into the inside of your mouth. This can lead to tenderness in your gums or mouth tissue.
- Cuts and Sores: If left untreated, a sharp end of the wire can cause cuts or sores on the inside of your mouth, leading to further discomfort and potential infection.
- Delayed Treatment: While it’s not always an emergency, leaving a broken wire untreated for too long could delay the progress of your orthodontic treatment, affecting your overall results.
How to Prevent Wires from Breaking and Getting Pokey
Taking good care of your braces can help prevent problems like broken wires. Here are some tips to keep your braces in great condition:
- Avoid the “Don’t Eat” list of Foods: Steer clear of hard, sticky, or chewy foods, like popcorn, caramel, and gum. These foods can damage your braces and cause wires to pop out.
- Wear a Mouthguard: If you participate in sports, make sure to wear a mouthguard to protect your braces from impact. This can prevent accidental damage during physical activities.
- Gentle Chewing: when you have braces you have to carefully and gently chew your food to avoiding biting down hard on a bracket or wire and causing a broken bracket or pokey wire.
