Understanding Orthodontic Treatment FAQs
Orthodontic treatment offers numerous benefits, including:
- Enhanced oral hygiene: Straight teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease.
- Improved aesthetics: Properly aligned teeth create a more balanced and attractive smile.
- Better function: Correcting bite issues can alleviate difficulties in chewing, speaking, and can reduce strain on jaw joints.
- Overall health: Proper alignment can lead to better digestion and nutritional health.
No, they will not. In most individuals, the space available for the front teeth decreases with age after the permanent molars erupt. Most dental and/or skeletal problems are not self-correcting and may worsen over time. Delaying treatment in hopes that a child will outgrow harmful patterns can waste precious time. By late adolescence, correcting these issues may require tooth extractions or even surgery. Common causes of dental and skeletal problems include genetics, missing or extra teeth, crowding, disproportionate jaw growth, and habits such as thumb sucking. The American Association of Orthodontist recommended screening all children by age 7 by an orthodontist to screen for any issues that should be addressed with early treatment- to get dental and growth development back on track. Early evaluation and treatment can prevent more severe issues later on.
They work by applying continuous, gentle pressure to your teeth over time to gradually move them into their correct positions. Small metal or ceramic brackets are bonded to the surface of each tooth. These brackets serve as anchors that hold the archwire in place. The archwire is a thin metal wire connects the brackets and provides the force needed to move the teeth. Adjustments and changes of the archwire are made over time to guide the teeth into their proper alignment. The archwire applies a steady, controlled pressure to the teeth and their surrounding bone. This pressure stimulates the bone around the teeth to remodel, allowing the teeth to shift into their desired positions.

Clear aligners for teeth such as the well-known brand Invisalign® are digitally designed, clear plastic trays that gently move your teeth into their ideal positions programmed by Dr Boss. They are made from smooth, BPA-free plastic, they offer a comfortable fit without irritating your cheeks or gums.
Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign and clear aligners are removable, letting you enjoy your favorite foods and maintain excellent oral hygiene throughout the treatment process. Instead of having brackets and wires moving your teeth, the removable clear aligners gradually move your teeth to their ideal position as you move forward in your series of of clear aligner trays. Each subsequent aligner is gently moving the teeth to towards their destination. Clear aligners can be a great solution for teens and adults who want to straighten their teeth and improve their bites, but do not braces.

Orthodontic Care for Children FAQs
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, an orthodontist can identify subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present. Orthodontists are specially trained to identify these issues early that might be missed by other dental providers. Early detection allows for timely intervention, which can simplify or even eliminate the need for more extensive treatment later.

Yes. Phase I Orthodontics, or early interceptive treatment, is initiated while many baby teeth are still present to address problems that could worsen without correction. This early intervention can guide jaw growth, correct harmful oral habits, and improve the appearance and function of your child's teeth.
Check out our blog post on this topic.
Phase I treatment, when needed, typically begins between ages 7 and 10 and lasts about 12 months. The primary objective is to address significant problems early, such as bite complications (crossbites) or crowded teeth, to prevent them from becoming more severe. This proactive approach can improve self-esteem and set the foundation for a healthy, beautiful smile.
Most children will still need comprehensive treatment with either braces or clear aligners after Phase I treatment. There is a monitoring period in which we will monitor permanent teeth progress and growth. Depending on the development, Phase II treatment (full braces or clear aligners) may be recommended to complete the alignment and bite correction. Dr Boss will keep you informed throughout to ensure the best outcome for your child.

Life With Braces or Clear Aligners FAQs
The American Dental Association recommends twice-yearly exams and cleanings. However, while in orthodontic treatment some people may need more frequent check-ups and cleanings. The orthodontist may recommend more frequent visits to your dentist while you are in orthodontic treatment.
The process of adhering the braces to the teeth is painless. Starting about 12 hours after braces are put on, it is normal to experience soreness of the teeth that usually lasts the first week. During this time, the cheeks and lips will also be getting used to the braces and may become sore as well until they build up a callous like layer after which the braces will feel much more comfortable. After certain adjustments, you may experience mild soreness for a few days, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol or Advil.
We schedule between 60 to 90 minute appointment for placing braces on the teeth. During this appointment, we'll also provide instructions on how to care for your new braces.
Yes. There's no need to miss an entire day. You can return to your regular activities immediately after your appointment.
Yes. We recommend using an orthodontic mouthguard, which can be purchased on Amazon or any local sports store such as Academy or Dick Sporting Goods.
Yes. Playing musical instruments may require a short adjustment period, but you'll be back to your usual performance soon. We usually recommend our bands kids to just practice a little extra the first few days after the braces get placed to acclimate to the new feel.
Yes. To prevent damage to your braces, avoid hard, sticky, crunchy foods. Examples of things to avoid: chewing ice, hard candy, caramel, and raw vegetables. We'll provide a comprehensive list and guidance to help you maintain your braces.
Retainers are custom-made appliances designed to hold your teeth in their corrected positions after orthodontic treatment. Teeth naturally tend to shift over time due to age and everyday wear. Wearing your retainers as instructed is essential to maintain your new smile and protect the investment you’ve made in your orthodontic care.
Click the following links to learn more about retainers and why they are important:
Yes! Teeth with crowns can move just like natural teeth with fillings. If you have missing teeth, orthodontic treatment can help align the surrounding teeth to improve function and appearance. In fact, orthodontics is often an important step in preparing your mouth for future dental restorations, such as implants or bridges.
Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is critical during orthodontic treatment. We recommend brushing after every meal and before bed with a fluoride toothpaste. At minimum the teeth and braces need be cleaned thoroughly in the morning and night along with using a Waterpik/water flosser to flush any build up from around the brackets, gums, and between the teeth. This helps prevent plaque buildup, tooth decay, and gum issues around your braces. Our team will show you the best techniques for brushing and flossing with braces, and if needed, we may prescribe a special fluoride rinse to further protect your teeth during treatment.
Orthodontic emergencies are rare, but if you experience significant discomfort or if something breaks—such as a loose bracket, poking wire, or broken appliance. Please check out the orthodontic emergency page and our orthodontic emergency blog page for additional information.
